تُعد ذكرى 20 أوت محطة بارزة في تاريخ الثورة التحريرية الجزائرية، باعتبارها تخلّد حدثين متكاملين، هما هجومات الشمال القسنطيني سنة 1955 ومؤتمر الصومام سنة 1956.
ويرى مؤرخون أن هجومات الشمال القسنطيني، بقيادة الشهيد زيغود يوسف، شكلت دفعة قوية للثورة، وأبرزت التلاحم بين الشعب وجبهة وجيش التحرير الوطني، كما ساهمت في إفشال محاولات الاستعمار عزل الثورة ومحاصرتها.
وبعد عام، جاء مؤتمر الصومام ليعزز تنظيم الثورة وهيكلتها، من خلال توحيد هياكل القيادة وإعادة تنظيم التقسيم الجغرافي للثورة وإنشاء هيئات قيادية ساهمت في تنسيق العمل الثوري.
ويجسد الحدثان، وفق المؤرخين، تطور الثورة الجزائرية من توسيع العمل المسلح والالتفاف الشعبي إلى تعزيز التنظيم والتخطيط الاستراتيجي، وصولًا إلى تحقيق هدف استعادة السيادة الوطنية.
